Now that the economy has taken a toll on families many kids and teens have to really think about what they want for Christmas. But that when Black Friday comes and save the day! You can get great sales and even free stuff.

Food Drive

This year The Norwood High School will be partnering with the Freestore Foodbank for a holiday food drive beginning December second. All canned goods and other non-perishable food items are welcome (no ramen noodles please). Each advisory will be assigned a National Honor Society student to encourage all students to give the food drive what they can. Your fellow NHS student will be responsible for keeping count of the items and collecting and boxing at the end of the food drive. The top three advisories will receive a Big Awesome Holiday Food Fest. We will be tallying items on both December 8th and December 15th. The winners will be determined both by total number of items and an average of the winning advisories from both counts. So Give the Food Drive what ever you can, The littlest thing can make the biggest difference.

Cyber Monday

This past Monday Nov. 29th, was an acknowledged day for many online shoppers which is known as Cyber Monday. Customers received discounts all over the world for many stores. Free shipping was also a plus for those who love to shop online. This day is provided to those who don’t like the crowds usually at the mall for Black Friday. So next year when Black Friday comes around, don’t be disappointed when you don’t feel like getting out of bed to stand in the overcrowded lines, maybe online shopping is for you!

Thanksgiving Day

Thanksgiving is definetly my top holiday of the year. When it starts getting cold out In November I always think of some warm turkey and football. I always go to Huntsville, Alabama to my grandparent’s house during this time. Me and my grandpa usually fish that morning also then go to the house and watch football while eating with the family. My favorite foods my grandma makes for Thanksgiving are sweet potatoes, cranberry sauce, mashed potatoes and gravy, and of course turkey! Two days after thanksgiving is also the Iron bowl which is a huge game in that state and I’m an Alabama fan. Thanksgiving always has been my favorite time of year because it honestly doesn’t last one day it’s like a three or four days because of all the leftovers, football games, and black Friday deals.

LITTLE WOMEN

The new musical Little Women will have their informational session on November 9th to learn the music for audition. Auditions will be held the 15 and 16 which is a Wednesday and a Thursday. Songs that student would be assign to sing Give me by Third Modern Millie, Reflection from the movie Mulan, or selections from the Westside story. Parts will be announced that following Friday.

On October 24, The Alliance for a Healthier Generation announces twenty-one educators nationwide for making the school environment healthier. Superintendents, health teachers, physical education teachers and food service directors have been chosen as the Champions of the 2011 Healthy School program. Norwood’s very own Roger Kipp Jr., has been chosen to be one of these champions and has done a great job representing Norwood High School. He is the food service director at our school and it is easy to see the positive changes in the cafeteria. Norwood High School would like to thank Roger Kipp Jr. for all of the positive improvements he has made to the cafeteria.

As the final days of the Indians football season comes to the end, Players are Happy but some are also sad. Some players miss having practice right after school. For some this was their last season as a Norwood Indians, Seniors Zak Marksburry, Luke Lillard, Scottie Stapleton, Alex Johnson, Travis Vickers, Andy McDonald, and Josh Hobbs. The seniors received a jacket with their name on them. The team’s record this year was 2-8. All the seniors from the Class of 2011 will be missed out there on the field on Friday nights.

Halloween

Halloween begins October 31st, and begins at 6:30 p.m. and don’t end until about 9:00 p.m. It is a time when you dress up in a cute, funny, or even scary costume. Children all over the world go “trick-or-treating.” Trick-or-treating is when children or even teenagers go door to door to get all the goods; meaning candy! People do various things when it comes to Halloween rather it’s passing out candy, getting candy, going to Haunted Houses, or even just sitting at home watching scary movies for the thrill! Let you be the one to decide, and watch the little ones run and have a good time.

Senior Night

Friday October 28 is going to be a sad moment for the seniors. As seniors approach there last high school football game they are getting very upset. It is Luke Lillard, Alex Johnson, Scottie Stapleton, Travis Vickers, Josh Hobbs, Zak Marksbury and Andy Mcdonald’s last football game of their high school career. This is the last time that Ali Glisson, Hannah Haskins, Kayla Cromer, Katelyn Coffey and Chrissy Stacey will be on the sidelines of Shea Stadium cheering on there home town Indians.
Although the seniors are saying goodbye to the sports they have worked so hard for, it is also there chance to make a lasting impression. Now is the time that the seniors are going to shine in the center of attention. Come support our seniors as they play and cheer there last game against Mt. Healthy at Shea Stadium.

On Wedensday October 19th, our Varsity boys soccer team won their very first post season tournament. They played Bethel-Tate on a very cold, rainy night. After a full day of rain, Shea Stadium’s turf was the wettest the team had ever played on. The boys did very well agaisnt Bethel-Tate with a 3-0 win and another shut out by Sophomore goalie Jamie Cole. The goals were scored by Senior Justin Schleben with one goal, and Senior Ryan Ho with two. Because of this win the boys soccer team will play Goshen at home, Saturday at 7 o’ clock. Come out if you want to show your Norwood pride!

10th grade Community service Committee

The tenth grade community service committee is currently bringing in small toys and nick-knacks for Sharpsburg primary school. Mrs. Smith suggested to the committee to bring in slides, toys, bubbles, and bikes. Students must bring in at least one toy for their recess.

Carl Lindner Jr.

Carl Lindner Jr. passed away at age 92. Known as the most successful businessman of Cincinnati he dropped out of high school then began to deliver milk for his families’ dairy. This dairy was later known as United Dairy Farmers. Mr. Lindner gave many great things to the community. One example is he donated $100,000 to the Norwood Service League. He also donated money to get school supplies and supplies for the Norwood Police Department multiple times. Lindner was the owner of Chiquita and the Cincinnati Reds for a period of time. He was responsible for bringing Ken Griffey to the Reds, an icon for the cities baseball team. Mr. Lindner will never be forgotten by the people of Norwood and Cincinnati.

Indianetts Perform At Premier Night

This year’s Homecoming has come with a new DJ, three of them actually. The trio created mixed feelings among Homecoming goers. Few people weren’t satisfied while others absolutely loved their taste. Sophomore Shelby Hemmer says they were “alright”. The tempo of some of the music defiantly created an odd scene; some couples romantically slow dancing together while the surrounding peers are grinding against anyone and everyone. Though the music may not be what some are used it, a rememberable time was had by all.

On Friday night the Varsity Norwood Indians football played the Talawanda Braves as the Indians homecoming game. It was a close game, by the end of the first half the Norwood indians were down 6 to 0. But as the Indians rallied together they came out of the locker rooms with a new found attitude to take the win with a 15 to 12 victory over the Braves winning there homecoming game.

The Norwood Boys soccer team on Oct. 12 became the FAVC champs beating Edgewood 2-1. There record now is 13-2-1. This is the first time in Norwood history that the team has became champs of the FAVC and it’s a huge accomplishment!
Junior, Max Schneider said “It felt good to know that all of our hard work paid off.” The team will now go on to play Bethel-Tate in the post season on Oct. 19. Good luck boys.

National Hispanic Heritage Month

Last night the Lady Indians soccer team played againtst the Northwest Knights. They upseted the Knights in there 4-0 win. Sophmore Emily Worley and Junior Natalie Geiger both scored two goals each. It was a very physical gane and the Indains had gone full go the whole game. Senior captain Emily Grubb said "We worked very hard this week and during the game to get the win."

Senior Zak Marksberry was injured at a home game vs. Walnut Hills, on Friday October 6th. He had broken his ACL, by someone tackling him and him landing the wrong way. This is his Senior year and last year to play high school football. Do we know if he will be able to play again or is he out for the season? Football players Alex Johnson and Scottie Stapleton both think not. With an injury like that one, it would be hard to come back. If he does that would be suprising and amazing!

The Norwood girls soccer team played the Ross Rams Tuesday September 20th at Ross and ended up with a very disappointing loss of 4-0. There current record is now 6-1-3but they are determined to do great things this year and are going to work extremely hard.
I met with Senior, Emily Grubb and asked her about the game and what they learned because of the loss. She responded “We all learned that we need to work better as a team.”

Homecoming

On October 8 in the high school gym, homecoming will take place. The theme for this year is A Walk through Wonderland. The gym will be decorated in white, green, yellow, and neon pink!

This year’s nominees consist of 11 girls and 10 guys. On court for Queen in no specific order, Emily Grubb, Holly Schneider, Kayla Cromer, Katlyn Coffey, Claire Stirsman, Ali Glisson, Victoria Phelps, Megan Chitwood, Heather Rowland, Katea Madden, And finally Molly Elliott. On court for King in no specific order, Luke Lillard, Josh Hobbs, Michael Mattingly, Ryan Ho, Ever Banderas, Alex Johnson, Travis Vickers, James Crocker, Zak Marksbury, and Donovan Brown. So go out and get your homecoming dresses and a new tie, this years homecoming is going to be one of the best yet!

Remembering 9/11: the 10th Anniversary

To honor the 10th year anniversary of 9/11, the city of New York is building one tower named the Freedom Tower to commemorate the terrorist attacks of 9/11. Also where the 2nd world trade center stood, there is a large fountain with all the victims’ names from 9/11. Also, there were events held at the Pentagon and Shanksville, PA remembering Flight 93 and the attack on the pentagon. Flight 93 was the plane that went down in rural Pennsylvania. Passengers fought against the terrorists to bring the plane down. The government still doesn’t know where the terrorists were planning on attacking. Our prayers are with the families of the victims. God Bless America.

Girl's Volleyball

On Monday, the Girl's Varsity volleyball team played Finneytown and won 3 out of the 5 games. Senior Heather Rowland said, " They were a tough school to compete with." Heather led the team with 27 kills and 15 digs. Sophmore Natalie Stoeppel also palyed a great series of games with 14 kills and 13 digs. Others that did well were Hannah Moyers, Megan Chitwood, Samantha Saylor, Ali Cole, and Carmen Ventura. The school looks forward to there next home game versus Winton Woods. Good luck!

Last night on September 13th, the Norwood Indians had a game verse the Deer Park Wildcats. Norwood played a rough game last night, full of yellow cards (penalties). At the end, Norwood came up on top defeating Deer Park, 3-0. Norwood had a great game, with great passing, communication, and in the end, execution.
The winning score, 3-0, is much better compared to last years 0-0 tie. This brings Norwood’s Varsity soccer team up to a record of 7-2-0. With three players in the top ten FAVC standings, a winning season so far, and already being halfway through the season, Norwood boy’s soccer shows a lot of promise.

The First pep rally of the year happened last Friday on the third of September. The freshman, sophmore, junior, and senior class gathered to cheer on fellow students and athletes as they participated in fun and games. The Juniors, for what may be the first time cheer off setting high standards for future pep rallies. Joey Dawson, sophmore says,"I enjoy the guys sitting on ice. It was pretty awesome"Football players from each class sat on the ice for the entire pep rally and ,despite some complaining, stuck it out. Hopefully, future pep rallies will be just as cool as the last.
